

Risk Factors
If you’re an adult, and have any of the following risk factors, you should consider talking to your health care provider about your potential risk of developing type 2 diabetes:- 40 years of age or older
- member of a high-risk group (Aboriginal, Hispanic, Asian, South Asian, African descent)
- first degree relative (mother, father, brother, sister) diagnosed with type 2 diabetes
- history of impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) or impaired fasting glucose (IFG)
- history of gestational diabetes or diabetes diagnosed during pregnancy
- gave birth to a baby that weighed over 4 kg or 9 lb at birth
- have been told you have high blood pressure or hypertension
- have been told you have high cholesterol or fats in your blood
- overweight or obese, particularly at your waist
- have had a stroke, heart attack or blocked vessels in your legs or feet
- have been told you have health problems that may be linked to diabetes
- have been told you have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
- have been told you have a skin condition called acanthosis nigricans
- have been told you have schizophrenia
